ENTRY CRITERIA:
This year’s contest is open to any student in grades 6th –
12th in the greater Lansing area’s public, private, charter,
parochial, or home school.
AWARDS:
One
essay will be selected for 1st
and 2nd
Place
at each category level.
Monetary award:
Category I: 1st Place - $75
2nd Place - $50
Category II: 1st Place - $100 2nd Place-
$75
A
certificate of participation will be given to all students who
enter and meet the contest criteria. Winners will be notified in
writing and via phone. Winning essays will be published in the
‘Juneteenth Telegraph’. |

CATEGORY I
- 6th,7th, 8th
Grades (250 – 350 words)
Topic: Why
should Juneteenth become an official national holiday
observance?
CATEGORY II
-
9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Grades (400 – 500 words)
Topic: Freedom
is the most basic of all human rights, and yet throughout
history many individuals and nations have had to struggle to be
free. Reflect on why is it important that people in America and
other countries continue to cultivate knowledge and appreciation
of their freedoms not only on Juneteenth Day, but every day. How
can you and your generation support the global pursuit of
freedom for all? |
CONTEST RULES
All
contestants must complete and submit the ‘Student Information Form’ with
their entry.
Essay
Format must meet the following requirements:
1. Typed in 12 pt. or 14 pt. Times New Roman or Arial (font).
2. Double spaced with a bibliography listing all references used.
3. Essays must have a title and stay on the topic. They will be
judged on the correct use of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and
originality. Maps, drawings, pictures, and graphics should not be
included.
4. Word count cannot be less than or exceed category range.
Any
student who has previously won an Award is ineligible for entry into
this year’s contest unless they have moved from Category I to Category
II. .
DEADLINE
Essays must be
taken to the Capital Area District Library – Main Library in Downtown
Lansing or any CADL branch location April 10 – May 7, 2011. Entries
received after May 7, 2011 will not be eligible and will not be
returned.
